Getting people to start watching your video is one thing, but how do you make sure that once they’ve started that they stay until the end? Also, how do you ensure that they come back for more? Kurt Cobain had the answer: ‘Entertain us’. Turn your viewers into fans; make sure they like it enough to come back. Mass marketing is a thing of the past: engage each of your consumers individually.
Broadcasting a video is no longer a sufficient way to engage your users. The future is all about interaction and getting your viewers to engage with your content.
Video engagement tells you how engaged viewers are with your video and how they interact with it. This can be measured by looking at what actions viewers are taking, such as shares, likes and comments. It can also be measured by looking at how long people watch a video. Take a minimum number of seconds or minutes or a percentage of the total duration of the video and set that as a limit. When a viewer hits that number, the viewer is engaged with the content.

Video can be fun. But linear, non-interactive video poses a problem - the viewer is a passive spectator. Interactive videos offer the possibility to add clickable elements, allowing your viewer to make choices, or even influence the video’s storyline. This changes viewers into active participants, which leaves only one remaining challenge, that of how to analyse what it is that makes your client return.
Curious what video engagement looks like in practice? We like to give the right example. In 2016 we celebrated our 10-year anniversary as a company and we recorded the celebration. Next, we turned this footage into an interactive video, in which viewers decide what part of the evening they want to watch.
With video feedback, viewers tell you what they think of your video by awarding a number or an amount of stars. Open feedback takes it one step further by asking the viewer targeted questions such as: What do you think of the video? What can we improve? What do you want to see more of? By reacting to feedback on your platform, you adapt to your viewers wishes, making it more interesting for the customer to come back.
