Hosting on external platforms
Many organisations choose to host videos from their website on external platforms, such as YouTube. However, these platforms increasingly use login credentials through Google accounts, which means that the website processes user data.
This has the disadvantage that Google links personal data such as viewing history and preferences to the user’s account, which can lead to targeted ads and possible privacy violations. In addition, sharing this data with third parties may violate user privacy, especially if the user is unaware of how his or her data is being used and shared.
Players that put privacy first
Some video players do not require users to consent to cookies, as they only use analytical or functional cookies intended to enhance website functionality.
While users can disable these “necessary” cookies, statistics are still collected; the only limitation is that each session is treated as a “unique viewer” due to the absence of cookies for identifying returning visitors.
If all cookies are disabled, the player will also not place ‘functional’ cookies. In that case, the player will not remember previous user settings (preferences regarding volume, subtitles, audio description, etc.).
Choose video platforms that guarantee privacy
For public sector organizations in the Netherlands, it is crucial to select a platform that allows full control over cookies, both to comply with the GDPR and to prioritize user-centered data protection. By partnering with a certified provider, organizations can have peace of mind about the security and privacy of their users.
